Super Mario 64 Online brings multiplayer to the classic N64 title

One of the most iconic and cherished games that was ever released for the Nintendo 64 console was the 1996 title Super Mario 64, an immersive and surprisingly expansive title that also marked Mario and company's transition into the realm of 3D. Now, more than 20 years later, a new fan-made romhack allows players to experience Super Mario 64 in a whole new way, namely, alongside their friends.

The aptly titled Super Mario 64 Online allows up to 24 players to venture through the game’s Mushroom Kingdom on a single server (and there are multiple servers you can join). Rather than have a bunch of identical Marios running around, the romhack’s creators went the extra mile and created a series of additional playable avatars for characters like Luigi, Yoshi, Toad, Princess Peach, Rosalina, Wario, and Waluigi. Even better, each of the other characters have their own distinct movement styles and abilities (Peach, for example, can float after jumping, while Wario is immune to the damage caused from being flattened by certain enemies).

Sadly, Nintendo’s infamous over-protection of its copyright properties means that the Super Mario 64 Online romhack likely won’t be around forever, so if you want to give it a try for yourself, it’s probably best to do so sooner rather than later. You can watch a trailer for the romhack and also find instructions for downloading it and setting it up yourself courtesy of this YouTube page.
